This project was an exploration of activation. As an artist I find passion for both fine art and street art, I think both realms parallel each other in that their strengths are each others weaknesses.
I was intrigue by the idea that an artwork is simply just an object until it is contextualised by the space it occupies, and how the values of differing spaces therefore transform the same artwork uniquely.

Above are examples of my first explorations for this project. This iterations outcome were canvases depicting brick and mortar and one of my puppets using acrylic paint, wrapped in glad wrap which had spray painted imagery. The glad wrap element existed between both realms, as initially I had them stretched up across the brickwork in an alleyway prior to the canvases, however, I felt the addition of the canvases disrupt my process as it felt entirely different due to the canvases and not just the exhibition space.

Above and below depict the next iterations and the final resolved outcomes. I loved the tangible and textural aspects that came with the glad wrap element within my first outcomes, but felt I needed to elevate the portion that they were attached to. This took shape in a sculptural form, recreating urban utility objects building off of some of my prior works.
The outcomes truly felt like two differing exhibitions, whilst having the same subject matter. Out on the street I felt there were themes of preservation and temporariness, the act of installation also gave presence to performance art which felt crucial in this iterations. The exhibition inside spoke more towards hierarchy, elevating these objects and suggesting importance.
